Flood
Relief - Vakola, Jogeshwari
On August 2005 Vakola was
coping with the destruction caused by the Mumbai floods. The Art of Living
began flood relief initiatives which included medical camps and
trauma-relief workshops. In August, two such programs were held which saw
the participation of 65 people which greatly relieved the flood-related
psychosis that had developed. A week-long cleanliness drive ensured that the
dirt accumulated by the floods was cleaned.
Later the Kalina slums were
visited by Poojya Sri Sri Ravi Shankarji. The locals had wonderful healing
experiences when Guruji visited their homes in narrow chawls.
In Meghwadi, when Jogeshwari
was destructed by heavy rains and floods, the Art of Living volunteers
collected food grain packets, oil, masalas (spices), towels and mats from
door to door and distributed them to 250 people. A medical camp was held on
25th September and 150 patients were given free medicines. Moreover, water
purifier sachets were distributed freely to all the houses.
A Navchetna Shibir was
organized in Meghwadi with 53 participants who reported healing experiences.
Several women empowerment initiatives were started with women preparing
packets of mukhwas (mouth fresher) and selling them. The earnings have given
them a sense of economic independence, a first for the women. |
