    • Were you able to understand relationships just like that?
    • Didn’t you face dangers as teens?
    • Didn’t you wish as a teen your father or mother had done differently when you were a teen?

Encourage teens to learn, learn and learn.

Provide a platform to teens to learn about themselves, recognize their interests and help them choose a career. Learning can be through reading books, watching videos, observing people and situations, participating in workshops, etc.

Encourage your teens, “Pursue what you like and like what you pursue.”

Initially, guide your teens to follow their passion and then analyze if their passion can be pursued as a successful career. Keep updating their knowledge. Be open. Knowledge may pop up from anywhere.

Make your teens value their time and your money.

An exhibition stall in society, a stall in a school fair, or a part-time job is a good outlet for teens to manage money and learn time management.

Breathing right leads to success.

What do we do in times of stress? Sigh, right? This natural response leads us to a secret that emotions have a connection with our breath. Now, learning a breathing technique can change your negative or stressful mind to a positive state. Hence, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar recommends teenagers practice a few minutes of breathing exercise, pranayama and meditation every day. This will fill the teens with energy and enthusiasm to take up new challenges and they will be able to succeed in all walks of life.

Feed not only your teens but also their friends.

Teens have a great appetite, and so do their friends. Invite your child’s friends to have food at your house. When your kitchen becomes an ATM (Any time meal), then your teen and his friend will hang out frequently at your place. This way, you will develop a good rapport with them.

If you tell him directly, your child may not easily accept or do certain things that you want him to do. But he can certainly be made to do so through his friends, as your kid is unlikely to refuse their friends and is likely to follow whatever they do. Inviting your child’s friends at home for food presents you with an opportunity to influence the friends in a positive way and through them your own child.

Connect with the family of your teens’ friends.

A get-together with the family of your kids’ friends will bring belongingness among all to support each other in time of need (especially in career consultation).

Humility helps in being a successful teen.

Teenagers who have many ifs and buts with taste and are choosy about their food should be encouraged or persuaded to help in the kitchen. Their active participation in the preparation of meals will teach them to value food and have an overall food awareness. They will value the efforts of all who play a part in bringing food from farm to plate. This is a good illustration of inducing gratitude in them. Gratefulness makes a person down-to-earth and humble.

‘Jaisa ann waisa mann’ (What you eat is what you become)

“Investing in early childhood nutrition is a surefire strategy. The returns are incredibly high.” – Anne M. Mulcahy. You can also infer from this that better the nutrition of a child, better is the health and better are the chances that the teen will succeed in life. Research says healthy and naturally farmed home-cooked food is the best.

Ask yourself…

Were you able to understand relationships just like that? No, isn’t it? Then give space and time to your teen also.

Didn’t you face dangers as teens? Instead of reacting in righteous anger and lowering your teens’ self-esteem, have empathy and respond from the space of love.

Didn’t you wish as a teen your father or mother had done differently when you were a teen? The answer to this question will help you bridge the gap between permissive parenting and harsh discipline.
