Since its inception in 2003, The Art of Living has played a pivotal role in Iraq, striving to alleviate suffering and foster peace amidst war, thus inspiring a new generation of leaders. Mawahib Al Shaibani’s journey is one such story of inspiration.
As an integral member and Program Coordinator of The Art of Living in Iraq, Mawahib’s commitment to serving humanity became evident early in her journey. She embarked on a path of selfless service, training to become an Art of Living teacher to support communities ravaged by conflict. Mawahib has facilitated numerous workshops in schools, corporations, and other institutions. Her role extends beyond mere facilitation; she acts as a bridge between various stakeholders, including NGOs, government entities, and local communities, to implement impactful programs addressing social and humanitarian needs in the Middle East.
One of Mawahib’s significant contributions lies in her focus on women’s empowerment. Despite the cultural and systemic barriers that often limit women’s opportunities, Mawahib spearheads initiatives aimed at providing vocational training and promoting economic independence for Iraqi women in Baghdad and Karbala. Through workshops, educational programs, and skill-building initiatives, she empowers women to reclaim agency over their lives and contribute meaningfully to their communities.
What sets Mawahib apart is embodying the values espoused by her mentor, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. Inspired by his selflessness, resilience, and boundless optimism, she approaches her work with dedication and an unwavering belief in the transformative power of compassion. She adds, “Watching [Gurudev] work selflessly, tirelessly, enthusiastically, joyously – working towards making life a celebration on this planet – that is what inspires me to take on the challenges.”
