Personal Mantra for Meditation: How Does it Work

In the words of Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, “You take a personal mantra and you keep it within. It is like sowing a seed and closing the soil on top. Then that seed has roots below and shoots above. It sprouts like that. Sahaj samadhi is like sowing the seed of meditation. And then when you practice it every day, you will see so much bliss, clarity, calmness, and intuition.” It is a natural way to transcend thoughts.

What Makes a Mantra Powerful for Meditation

A mantra is a sound vibration that acts like a seed. Every seed has the potential to become a tree. Similarly, these sound vibrations contain all the possibilities of creation. Some mantras are in the seed form, called the bija mantras. Others are fully expressed, i.e, the fruit of the mantra is also expressed, such as the Gayatri mantra.

Bija mantras are taken to meditate. It is a sound vibration beyond the cognition of the mind. When the mind cannot cognize, it moves into a meditative space.

In Sanskrit, it is said, ‘manana trayate iti mantra.’ A mantra is that which saves you from repetitiveness. A repetitive thought is a worry. Mantras free you from your worries and take you to the infinite expanse of your consciousness.

Taking a Personal Mantra for Meditation

Different mantras serve different purposes and work best for different sets of people. A personal meditation mantra from an accomplished master holds a special impact. In a Sahaj Samadhi Dhyan Yoga course, you will get a special bija mantra that you will learn to use for meditation.

Benefits of Using a Personal Mantra for Meditation

When you know how to use a mantra for meditation, you can meditate anytime, anywhere, and without needing external guidance. Since the technique requires little effort, practically anyone can learn it. Several studies also reveal the efficacy of relieving depression with Sahaj Samadhi.
