In the midst of conflict and turmoil, the people of Afghanistan have endured unimaginable hardships for over two decades. Amidst this backdrop of war and strife, organizations like The Art of Living have stepped forward with trauma relief workshops to offer solace and peace to those affected by the ravages of violence. Through initiatives like the Breath-Water-Sound program, individuals, including women, children, and communities traumatized by war, have found a path towards healing and resilience.

Delivering Relief to War-Weary Afghans

The journey of trauma relief in Afghanistan began in February 2003 when The Art of Living initiated stress reduction and management training at the “Peace House” residential facility in Kabul. Here, child war victims with chronic health issues and injuries from landmines were among the first to experience the transformative power of the Breath-Water-Sound workshop.

After attending their first Breath-Water-Sound workshop, they underwent significant positive transformations, feeling considerably happier and more at ease. The Breath-Water-Sound program not only alleviates stress but also fosters a sense of belonging while enhancing overall health, mental well-being, enthusiasm, and focus. Participants often note improvements in relationships, mental clarity, and a newfound sense of joy and peace in their lives.

Additionally, donations from Art of Living volunteers provided essential support to villagers in Istalif, a village devastated by Taliban violence. Through these interventions, participants reported significant improvements in mental well-being, enthusiasm, and focus, alongside a sense of belonging and peace.

Relief for Humanitarian Workers and General Population

The impact of trauma relief efforts extended beyond individual participants to encompass entire communities.

Soon, staff from the Indian Embassy in Kabul, the State Bank of India, numerous international businessmen, Afghan physicians, NGO social workers, and members of the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crimes themselves also attended the Art of Living programs and reaped numerous benefits.

Sayeed Mansoor Naderi, Former Vice President of Parliament, Afghanistan, reflects on his experience: “Since learning the knowledge and techniques in the Art of Living course, I noticed increased energy, feelings of peacefulness and calmness, improved concentration and great physical flexibility.”

Solace to Women Amidst the Chaos of War

In addition, over 100 women from the villages of Danesh and Bhakukhan in Kapisa Province found relief from stress through the breathing techniques taught at the Breath-Water-Sound workshop, sponsored by the United Nations Office of Drugs and Crimes.

The impact of the workshops was palpable as more women continued to join, filling the space with laughter and camaraderie. Some women even attempted to sneak into the courses, some carrying babies hidden beneath their burkas.

Transformative Effects on Medical Professionals

Impressed by the research findings which proved the efficacy of the Sudarshan Kriya in reducing the effects of stress, the Chancellor of the Kabul Medical University, Dr. Cheragh Ali Cheragh requested a course for his surgical faculty who had experienced the same violent, chaotic war stresses just like any other residents.

From surgical faculty at Kabul Medical University to the administrative staff of the Ministry of Public Health, participants experienced newfound energy, relaxation, and lowered stress levels. These transformations not only benefited the individuals directly involved but also resonated within their families and communities, fostering a culture of resilience and well-being.

The journey of trauma relief in Afghanistan, spearheaded by organizations like The Art of Living, stands as a beacon of hope amidst the darkness of war. Through initiatives like the Breath-Water-Sound workshop, individuals and communities have found pathways to healing, resilience, and peace. As waves of positivity continue to spread across the country, these efforts serve as a testament to the power of compassion, community, and the human spirit in overcoming even the most profound challenges.
