Africa Day celebrations were marked with a difference on the 23rd May 2015 across Africa this year. Twenty-five African countries connected via webcast for a global peace meditation for Africa, with humanitarian and Peace Ambassador, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. The African continent were joined in the live African peace initiative by a further 53 international countries.
In Johannesburg, South Africa, the keynote speaker prior to Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s meditation was Ms Yasmin Sooka, executive director for the Foundation of Human Rights, as well as the previous Commissioner on the South African Truth & Reconciliation Commission. The event saw representation from the Department of Justice, the Department of Education and Diplomatic core members. Similar events were held across the continent.
Prison inmates from Luzira Prison in Uganda joined in the live online Africa Peace meditation.
At a time when Africa has burning issues of violence, crime, and conflict, meditation has been brought to the peace-building table as a way of uniting people on a deeper level.
The I Meditate Africa coordinator and Art of living teacher from South Africa, Vani Pavadai said, that in order to address outer safety & security, the need to address inner safety and security is imperative, and the benefit of meditation can be most beneficial in this regard for our continent.
