The following pages contain information that will help you in getting answers to most of the questions / clarifications that you might have related to the Navratri Celebrations. You are also most welcome to stop by the Help Desk set up at the venue for any additional assistance that may be needed.

Introduction

Navratri, Navaratri or Navaratra is a festival of worship and dance. The word Navaratri literally means nine nights in Sanskrit; Nava - Nine and Ratri - nights. The nine days represent the nine months spent by the baby in the mother’s womb. It represents the evolution of the consciousness to a heightened awareness.

In life, there are positive and negative qualities that affect us. Navratri represents how the negativity can be conquered by the inherent positive qualities in an individual so that one emerges as a divine being.

A period of introspection and purification, Navratri is traditionally an auspicious time for starting new ventures.

On the tenth day of October Navratri, the holy day of Dussehra, we celebrate the victory of good over evil.

In Art of Living Bangalore Ashram, when such a celebration happens, it is done for the benefit of all of humanity. It is done with an intention that all the people should be happy; there should be good rainfall, prosperity in the country and so on. Many 'homas' are conducted with the chanting of 'mantras' creating an atmosphere of positivity and celebration.

By sponsoring the puja or taking sankalpa, your name is recited and the puja is offered on your behalf.

Significances Of Homas

Navratri is the time for us to go inwards by involving ourselves into spiritual practices like Meditation, Pujas and Homas. These Pujas and Homas are conducted for the benefit of everyone. The celebrations at the Art of Living Navratri are marked by a series of yagnas and homas to nullify all the misery, sorrow and pain, provide solace and bring in peace throughout the world. They are also meant to protect the environment, by instilling honor and reverence for Mother Earth. Scientifically, the Homas have proven to purify the atmosphere, casting a healing effect on the mind and the body. Each day of this nine-day period has special implications and yagnas and homas are performed accordingly. All are Welcome to attend ALL Pujas, Yagnas, Satsangs and have prasad. In gratitude, you may also participate by taking a Sankalpa in the Yagnas.

Sri Maha Ganapathi Homa

The rituals begin with an offering to Ganesha, the Lord of Auspiciousness. Ganapathi Homa is symbolic of removing the obstacles before initiating any new venture.

Sri Navgraha Homa

Performed to propitiate Nine Planets, which influence various spheres of life. It nullifies the negative impact created by the Nav Grahas or Nine Planets.

Vaastu Shanthi Homa

Vastu Devta is the Lord for any construction or home. A possibility of any irregularities or doshas existing in the construction of home, factory etc is removed by this Homa. It is done to nullify the negative impact on the surroundings and the four directions.

Sri Maha Rudra Homa

Rudra is the manifestation of Lord Shiva. It is one of the most ancient Homas from the text of Vedas. It is done for overall prosperity, health, happiness and removal of obstructions.

Sri Maha Sudarshan Homa

Offered to Lord Sudarshana/Narayana, it signifies the removal of ignorance and illumination of a new life enriched with knowledge. Sudarshan signifies the discus of Lord Narayana. It is supposed to be the infallible weapon of Lord Narayana. It bestows clarity and helps remove blocks in the mind. His Holiness Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar has blessed us with the Sudarshan Kriya.

Sri Nava Chandi Homa

The day of Ashtami or the eighth day, marks the pinnacle of all homas of Navaratri. The Sri Nava Chandi Homa(Durga, Bhadrakali, Amba, Annapoorna devi, Sarvamangala, Bhairavi, Chandika or Chandi, Lalita, Bhavani, Mookambika) is performed to remove any obstacles or blocks in growth - both internally and externally. By performing the Chandi Homa, the sufferings that are caused by hostile elements are eradicated.

Durga is the manifestation of the Mother Divine - the primordial force that creates, sustains and transforms this entire Universe. Of the triad of Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati, she is responsible for ridding the Universe of negative elements. This Homa is performed to remove negative tendencies of our self and the environment; and to increase strength, vigor, confidence and truth and capacity to fight the evil forces. 700 verses in praise of the goddess Durga are chanted. With the recitation of each verse, 108 offerings are made in the sacrificial fire invoking the goddess to bestow her grace. Chandi Homa is about recognizing the Divinity in the whole of creation.

Saraswati Puja

One of the triad of Durga, Lakshmi and Saraswati; Saraswati is the Goddess of knowledge, wisdom and peace and the Puja is done to imbibe these qualities in us. She is the Sadguna Swaroopa of Adyashakti.

Rudrabhishekam

This is the Puja of Rudra -- Shiva, the benevolent, the destroyer. Through this Puja, one can aim for inner peace and fulfillment.

Lalitha Sasasranaam

Sahasranaam literally means thousand names. The recitation of the thousand names of the Devi extols the various qualities of the divine in these various forms.

If ashram accommodation is full, what are my options?
Sumeru travels will be able to assist you in booking accommodation outside but close to the ashram. In addition, they will provide the transport required back and forth during the program.

I have booked accommodation outside the ashram, (either on my own or through Sumeru Travels) where do I go when I arrive at ashram?
If you have booked your own accommodation outside the ashram, please inform the welcome team at reception and they will direct you for printing of your nametag for the program.
If you have booked with Sumeru Travels, the welcome team at reception will direct you to Sumeru Travels where they will process your registration, stay and printing of your nametag for the program.
Please note: If you have booked your stay outside the ashram on your own, ashram will not be held responsible for your safety, transport & security.

Is the ashram wheelchair accessible?
There is ramp access to Vishalakshi Mantap, Canteen and Yagnashala, however that being said, there are still steps to the accommodations, to get inside Vishalakshi Mantap, etc.
Please contact Housing and Administration offices at ashram before you make your registration. A full-time care assistant at an extra cost is subject to availability which administration may be able to book for your comfort during your stay at ashram. However we would like to stress the point that a care assistance is subject to availability, if we cannot provide you with an assistant, your mobility in the ashram will be your responsibility.
