8 Unique and Meaningful Ideas to Celebrate Valentine’s Day

By Phillip Miner | Posted on February 12, 2018

Valentine’s Day is fast approaching, and if you’re like many people, you might have a complicated relationship with it. The overtones of love and spending time with your significant other can be overshadowed by the negative aspects  that have come to be associated with Valentine’s Day, such as consumerism and the idea that one day out of the year is more love-filled than others. Many people dread Valentine’s Day as much as they look forward to it.

Thankfully, there are ways to reinforce what Valentine’s Day is really supposed to be about. Approaching Valentine’s Day through a spiritual perspective helps to make it truly special, instead of just another excuse to spend money on your loved one. Through spirituality, you can become closer to your partner than ever before. Here are some ideas inspired by spirituality that are sure to reinforce your relationship this Valentine’s Day.

Here are some ideas inspired by spirituality that are sure to reinforce your relationship this Valentine’s Day.

1. Couples yoga.

Yoga is already known as a way to strengthen yourself. Why not use it as a way to strengthen the bond between you and your partner? As the name implies, this type of yoga focuses on poses that can be done with a partner (and sometimes require a partner to do). It often consists of back-to-back bends, assisted stretches, and face-to-face breathing exercises. Although there are couples yoga classes that you can sign up for, it’s easy to try at home. Here are some ideas for couples yoga poses to do at home.

2. Meditate together.

Meditation is a way to dive deep inside yourself and rejuvenate your mind. Meditating with a partner can be even more beneficial, as you strengthen the connection between the two of you. Meditating together can do wonders for a relationship, and can even help you learn to be more compassionate with each other during arguments. While meditation is normally a very personal experience, couples meditation can bring your breathing into alignment with that of your partner and will increase your ability to be receptive and responsive to them. Meditating with your partner is also a great way to establish a regular meditation practice!

3. Spend time together in nature.

Doing something in a natural setting, such as going for a hike, is a great way to bond with your partner in a method that’s off the beaten path. Most nature trails and hikes are usually free to take, and if it’s cold and wintry outside, you can try skating, skiing, or even to bogganing. If nature trails aren’t readily available for you, take a walk through the local park. As an added bonus, watch a sunrise or sunset together!

4. Volunteer together

Volunteering is always a great way to elevate your spirit. Why not elevate your spirits together by doing a volunteer activity with your partner? Volunteering is a great way to discover the more generous side of your partner and celebrate the good in them.. The key is to find something you are both passionate about. There are numerous options when it comes to volunteering, so finding something you both want to contribute to shouldn’t be too hard!

5. Contemplate the purpose of life together.

Discussing the big, difficult topics is a wonderful way to grow closer to your partner. Each of us has our own set of beliefs and experiences, and sharing them with a partner not only develops their worldview, but yours as well. Growing together in spirit and mind is a beautiful gift to give one another! Additionally, discussing matters like spirituality often involves a great deal of vulnerability, and vulnerability is one of the keys to a successful relationship.

6. Cook a meal together.

Whoever’s turn it is to cook dinner on most nights is often a heated topic of debate among couples. But learning to cook together not only solves this argument, but gives you a chance to connect, learn, and have fun together!  Pick a light, nourishing recipe full of foods that make you feel great, put on some good music, and have fun in the kitchen!

7. Go stargazing.

If the night is clear, stargazing is a romantic way to have some quiet time and marvel at the beauty of the universe together. Bring a warm blanket to cuddle up under, and a thermos of hot tea, and pick a place that is safe, but far enough off the beaten path that you’ll be able to see the stars in all of their glory. Stargazing has a wonderful tendency to remind you of your place in the universe, and your place with each other.
