Weekly Wisdom:
How Long Did Krishna and Arjuna Talk on the Battlefield?

By Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

In this Weekly Wisdom, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar shares beautiful insights on how long Krishna and Arjuna talked on the battlefield. Find out.

Q: How long did Lord Krishna and Arjuna talk in the middle of the battlefield? It must have taken a lot of time to chant 700 verses.

Gurudev : Whatever time they have taken, or however the knowledge has been transmitted, it was worth it. It’s worth the whole world because it’s so precious and has so much eternal wisdom in it. Timeless wisdom. That’s what’s important.

Events come and go. But sometimes events leave behind an immutable wisdom for eternity. That’s what we need to focus on. It’s not important what Krishna did, where he stayed, where he slept, where he washed, and where he walked. What is important is what he gave. What knowledge he gave.

We forget all those things. We just hold onto the outer, what he was wearing, what he was eating. If he was eating butter, we say “Oh, let me also eat butter.” We go into very mundane things. We must transcend that and listen to wisdom. That is the essence.

Behind every event, there’s knowledge. Behind every person there’s love. We have to grasp the love behind every person. Behind every object, there’s infinity. These three things you should keep in mind. If you see a jug of water, and you look deep into this object, what appears to be an object, what is there? You’ll see its atoms, and if you go beyond atoms it's a wave function.

The jug doesn’t exist. What exists is infinity. Behind this manifest universe, there’s the unmanifest space or field of vibration. That's the truth. Pay attention to that. Behind a person, there’s love. Behind an object, there’s infinity. Behind an event, what’s there? Knowledge. That’s how you make the shift and get that.

Q: What is the main goal of life? Focusing on moksha (liberation) or enjoying life on earth?

Gurudev : Moksha means it’s related to bondage. If there’s no bondage, there’s no freedom. And if you immerse yourself in enjoyment you’ll get bound. Then you want moksha. This isn’t this or that. If you have wisdom, you transcend both.

Wisdom and knowledge help you to go beyond bondage. When you go beyond bondage, that’s real enjoyment.

So moksha is real happiness. You get both. Did you get it? What to focus on in life is the self, the wisdom, the divinity. Then, you get both. You get happiness which is beyond bondage. Wisdom doesn’t let you get embroiled in the world or caught up in small things.

Q: What are the top things that a seeker should avoid on the spiritual path?

Gurudev : Procrastination, laziness, self-blame, and blaming others. These things we ought to avoid.

Q: How can we understand what God wants to say?

Gurudev : You just relax. God will make things happen if he wants to. You just relax. God, He or She, let them have their free time and holidays. Don’t bother them too much.

There are a lot of things that you have to do. You know what you need to do. Keep doing that. See what your inner voice says. Listen to that. Meditate

You see, prayer is asking God, “Give me this. Give me that.” Meditation is telling God, “Here, I’m ready to listen.” Okay? You meditate, and then you can listen to God.
