Weekly Wisdom:
How to Deal with Challenging People

By Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

In this Weekly Wisdom, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar shares beautiful insights on how to deal with different types of challenging people. Find out.

Q: How to stay calm or neutral when a person is constantly provoking you

Gurudev : If someone is constantly provoking or shouting at you, you get used to it. You don’t care. Why would you care? Only if someone is very happy and friendly and suddenly shouts at you does it disturb you a lot. Isn’t it so?

If they’re constantly nagging at you, you have no problem. But if they’re doing it now and then, here and there, that’s an issue. You shouldn’t mind even if they’re doing it once in a while, here and there. Just don’t mind that, okay?

If they’re constantly doing it, you’re used to it and don’t mind. If they do it once in a while, so what? You also do it once in a while. You throw tantrums, you pick on others. So, that also you don’t need to mind. All in all, you don’t need to bother about what others do. Okay?

Q: How to deal with people who attack your faith

Gurudev : Once you know they’re attacking your faith, you save it! It’s very clear. But when they attack your faith with you not knowing it, that’s where the problem is. Once you know they’re attacking your faith, you’re already one step out of it. You’re already putting your protective shield around it.

When you sit and talk about unnecessary things, this is where your faith gets shaken, because people go, “Why do you do all this meditation and all that? You know I did it so many days and it doesn’t do anything.”

So, what happens? Your confidence, your faith, without your knowledge, gets loosened somewhere. The land beneath you is getting shaken. Your floor is caving in. That’s what you need to be alert for.

Have your faith and attention on your practice, and know what beautiful upliftment it is bringing to you and your life. You know the benefits of faith. Once you know it, keep it. I remember our grandmothers and grandfathers would cover their ears and say, whenever someone said some negative things, “I don’t want to hear these negative comments.”

You don’t need to do that, but you should be aware that useless talk can shake the faith. They can’t totally take it out of you, I tell you.

Q: Do you have a formula or a solution for handling a disgruntled employee?

Gurudev : Have them do SKY Breath Meditation and make them see life from a bigger perspective. It’s only wisdom that can help them get out of a grumbling, cynical mindset. Cynicism is a sign of a dead spirit. When the life in you is dying, then it becomes cynical. When there are energy and enthusiasm, cynicism and complaints will fly away.

It’s only wisdom, knowledge, and humor that can keep the spirit and life alive in you. Just by giving them a raise or trying to please them or explain to them doesn’t really help. Their mind is clogged with negativity and complaints. Anything you do, still they’ll find some fault.

For that state of mind to change, they need only wisdom and meditation, and Kriya. This will help them to snap out of it.
