Lenaisa Art of Living Chapter hosts 'Yogathon'
“Each of us have an inner sun deep within us….the practice of yoga and meditation cultivates a journey to your inner self”
After Cyclothon and Marathon; Yogathon is the current buzz word for the new age fitness and fun experts. To raise awareness of yoga and its benefits for body and mind, Sri Sri Yoga Teachers from The Art of Living Foundation hosted a global 'Yogathon' on World Health day, April 7 2012: A 108 rounds of the Sun Saluation.
The Lenasia Art of Living Chapter in South Africa were delighted to be part of this global initiative. Over 120 participants saluted the rising autumn sun at 06h30 at Rose Park, Lenasia. The event attracted the youth and the elderly alike. Local yoga and dance schools, radio presenters, volunteers, scholars and pensioners came together, all with the same intention - to celebrate our sun with the rest of the world in a very unique way.
The practice of Sun Salutation (Surya Namaskar) has inherent benefits. It helps to bring the body and mind into a state of complete harmony. This event helped bridge the gap between various religions and age group. Yoga is for everybody! The Surya Namaskar yoga sequence was demonstrated and facilitated by our local Sri Sri Yoga facilitator, Deepna, who gracefully and gently guided the participants through the practice.
The Sun Salutation practice was followed by light gentle Sri Sri Yoga, a deep, rejuvenating relaxation. The morning ended with a guided “Sun meditation” in Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar's voice – the founder of the Art of Living Foundation.
In India, 1.29 million people participated in the Yogathon. Read more
