Are you a veteran? Chances are, if you aren’t one, you probably know or have one or more veterans in your family.

How can we help the veterans in our lives? Michael Fischman addresses this question in this podcast, “Wounds to the Soul,” featuring two veterans looking for healing and a documentary film about their journey on foot across the country.

As they finish their walk, they encounter a power breath workshop given by Project Welcome Home Troops; at this point, they begin learning to use the breath to release negative emotions that have stayed with them since their moral injuries occurred in the war zone.

In the podcast, Iraq war veteran Tom Voss and director Michael Collins speak about the documentary “Almost Sunrise,” which features Tom and his friend Anthony Anderson walking 2700 miles as a way to heal from combat experiences that continue to haunt them in civilian life. Along the way, they raise awareness of the phenomenon of moral injury and the solace they find through meditation.

Quotes from the podcast:

“We don’t want to share these experiences (of trauma) because we feel we’re protecting the people around us from them,” says Tom Voss.

Director Michael Collins says, “A veteran said to me that 22 veterans take their lives every day and I was shocked. I thought I must have heard that wrong… A moral injury is more about guilt and shame, the things that you have to do when you go to war and how you deal with that when you come home.”
