Who doesn’t love music? We use music to uplift our mood, to celebrate, sometimes to energize, and other times to calm ourselves. Music is a vital aspect of our lives. It’s no wonder that music has found its way into our meditations also. 

Relaxing meditation music is a great tool for any beginner meditator. Even people who have been meditating for years enjoy music for relaxation and meditation.

But how do music and meditation go together?

The power of music for meditation 

There are two ways to listen to music for meditation. 

The first way is to listen intently, be 100% “in” the music. This type of listening becomes a meditation as you become one with the music. This is music as meditation. But it isn’t always easy to surrender to such an experience.

Music that is immersive works best for this method. It could be melodic or have an intense rhythm, and may or may not have lyrics or words. It will almost always bring up some emotions, everything from grief to gratitude.

Before we explain the second way to use music for meditation, let’s define meditation. Simply put, meditation is the delicate art of doing nothing. Just having the intention to meditate and letting go brings you to a meditative state.

The second way to listen to music for meditation purposes is to listen and let go. Or in other words, lightly listen. Instrumental music, with a slower rhythm, works best. Piano and other string instruments along with the flute are ideal for a meditation experience.

Music that is played as a backdrop for guided meditations serves as a relaxation signal, telling the mind and body to let go so meditation can happen. Think of it as doing a little yoga before you sit for meditation— another way to prepare for meditation.

We already know that music can have a relaxing effect on us. That relaxing effect can improve your overall health. 

What are some of the other benefits of meditation music?

Music for meditation can bring us to the present moment, especially if there are no lyrics. Lyrics tend to take us on a journey of more thinking rather than into a deeply relaxing meditative state.

Less stress is a common benefit of meditation music. Less stress means less anxiety and more happiness.

Meditation music can also be a good tool for distraction. If you find yourself bombarded with too many thoughts, music can give you an alternative focus. But don’t focus too much on the music if your intention is meditation. The key to any meditation practice is to let go!

  1. Sit comfortably. Do not lie down, unless your goal is to sleep

  2. Keep your eyes closed

  3. Be with the music

  4. Let your thoughts come and go. Don’t try to get rid of them

  5. Listen for 5 to 10 minutes

  6. Continue to sit with eyes closed for another 5 to 10 minutes
