Escape the Chaos: Start Your Day with This Peace of Mind Meditation

By Denise Everheart | Updated on: September 18, 2020

Chaotic times call for self-care tools! Escape and start your day right with this peace of mind meditation.

Ask children if they want a piece of cake or peace of mind, what will they choose? A piece of cake, of course! But why? The child hasn’t experienced disturbance as an adult has. Peace of mind is a life-long universal desire, and we look for it in a myriad of ways. What if peace of mind had little to do with material milestones, attaining personal or professional goals, or even circumstances and situations being favorable, and everything to do with the inner workings of our minds. This is where meditation can possibly make the biggest difference in our lives, giving us unshakeable peace of mind- come what may!

Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, an expert meditation master says, “Peace is our very nature.” Meditation connects us to our true nature.

Although each person’s definition of peace of mind may vary, Dictionary.com states that peace of mind is a mental state of calmness or tranquility, a freedom from worry and anxiety. An image that comes to mind is that of a body of water that is smooth as glass, unperturbed, without a ripple— absolute stillness. Here are 10 ways meditation can lead to peace of mind and inner stillness:

Meditation

  1. Effectively reduces stress.

  2. Increases calm.

  3. Is naturally healing for emotional trauma.

  4. Increases emotional resilience.

  5. Reduces the intensity and number of thoughts bouncing around in our heads.

  6. Gives us a sharper intellect enabling better decision-making.

  7. Reduces the tendency to react mindlessly.

  8. Increases the tendency to respond rather than react.

  9. Creates mindfulness as a way of being rather than just a practice.

  10. Instills deep inner peace that emanates even outside of one’s self.

General tips for meditation

  • Make sure your stomach is not full. This will help prevent you from falling asleep in the middle of the meditation!

  • Move before meditating. Light yoga, going for a walk, or any physical activity helps release pent-up energy or restlessness and even tension in various parts of your body. You will have a deeper, more relaxed meditation if you do any of these first.

  • Be in the right space. It is advisable to meditate in a quiet place. This saves you from distraction and helps you go deeper into your experience. If the space is not quiet, you can practice acceptance— it is what it is, and let it be.

  • Drop your desires. Wanting a particular experience in meditation is the formula for not having the experience, or at least postponing. Instead, embrace the 3 keys of effortless meditation: I want nothing, I do nothing and I am nothing— only while you are meditating.

  • Let your thoughts pass by. Do not make an effort to get rid of your thoughts. Let them be and float away like clouds in a blue sky. Proper meditation is effortless.

  • Take it easy. Make sure you meditate for 10-20 minutes. Do not be in a hurry to open your eyes. A few light stretches with eyes closed helps you gently ease back into activity.

  • Meditate with your friends. Group meditations either in person or virtually over the internet increase the positive vibes and will also help you to be regular with your practice.

  • Be regular with your practice. Make your meditation time a priority. It is a good idea to meditate twice a day on a regular basis. This will ensure you make progress rather than just managing day-to-day.

  • Learn from a qualified trained instructor. The fastest and most effective way to learn anything is to seek an expert.
