Valentine's Day: Discover the Age Old Secret for the Perfect Date

By Pritika Nair┃Posted: February 06, 2019

“Should I buy her jewelry, or just settle for flowers this time?” “Oh, I hope he likes this perfume--and should I get him some new music, or perhaps plan a surprise for him?” There are too many plans, too many thoughts, too many things to consider. But what to do? Valentine’s day only comes once a year, after all!

If you’ve just started dating someone, you might be feeling a lot of excitement and nervousness, and if you’ve been with someone for a long time, the novelty of the holiday might have worn off. Of course, you want this Valentine’s Day to be special--one that your partner will remember for a long time. But how do you do that?

Whatever the case, you can make this Valentine’s Day spectacular with just 20 minutes of prep. Believe it or not, meditation is the key to adding that unforgettable element to your celebration of love.

If you’ve just started dating someone special:

Meditation can help calm your nerves

If it’s your first-ever Valentine’s Day with someone special, it’s only natural that you’ll be excited. First dates and first Valentine’s Day celebrations can be a little tricky, because you might not know each other very well yet!

Meditation helps you stay centered during these nerve-wracking first few dates, so that you can take the proper time to get to know your partner and really listen to them, learning about who they are and about what things they like to do. Meditating in the morning will keep you calm and focused for the whole day, so that you can approach your Valentine’s date with confidence.

Meditation helps keep you authentic

When you start seeing someone new, there’s always a natural tendency to put your best foot forward. Of course, you want to impress your date! But sometimes, in an attempt to make yourself shine, you may end up losing touch with who you really are. Whether it’s out of insecurity or just a lack of awareness, this is unfair both to yourself and to your love interest.

Meditation can help restore your confidence in your authentic self. It helps you get back to your natural state of being, so that you become comfortable in who you are and don’t feel the subconscious or conscious need to alter your personality in any way. Make sure you sit for a few minutes in meditation before the night of the big date to get back in touch with yourself and allow your partner to appreciate the real you.

Meditation helps you manage your expectations

Meditation is the key to enjoying every single moment of every single day. Sometimes, when we put a lot of work into planning a date, we do so out of anxiety. We want everything to be perfect, and so we also end up expecting a lot out of our plans. But the best way, we think, to have a successful Valentine’s Day date, is to let go of your expectations and let the day flow naturally.

When you meditate regularly, it becomes easier to accept things as they are. So even if your date is not going exactly as you expected it to, you can appreciate the reality of the present moment.

If you’re already partnered:

Meditation helps your creative juices flow

Planning a date with someone you’ve been with for a while can be a bit challenging at times. After all, you probably have a few Valentine’s dates under your belt, and you might have even used up all of your best ideas.

The good news is that when you meditate regularly, your creative flow experiences a major upgrade, and new ideas tend to come to you easily. Meditation gives you the chance to keep surprising your partner every year!

Meditation refreshes your perspective

If you’ve been with your partner for a long time, you’re probably extremely comfortable with them. That initial rush of romantic excitement might have been worn down to a comfortable companionship. But this doesn’t mean you should let monotony and dullness rule your relationship!

When you have a meditation practice, everything around you always seems fresh and new--including your partner. If both partners meditate, the effect is doubled. You begin to notice new things to appreciate about your love, and have the energy to explore novel things together, too!

So here’s the mantra to make your Valentine’s Day all the more special: Meditate for 20 minutes and watch the magic spread. Happy Valentine’s Day!
