Helping leprosy-affected in Singapore

Helping leprosy-affected in Singapore

Entering the living spaces of the leprosy-affected, The Art of Living has turned around the lives of 44 residents of The SILRA Home.

Since July 2007, The Art of Living volunteers have regularly participated in The Home’s expanding activities. Volunteers have been providing company to the wheelchair-bound residents and assisting them on rounds around The Home’s mangrove, pony, and bird watch areas. Simple activities like playing games with the residents or preparing and serving meals have contributed to the homely atmosphere.

Inspired by Gurudev's motto of ‘Making life a celebration’, volunteers have added a festive flavor through celebrations like Christmas, Hari Raya, Diwali and the Lantern Festival.

Magic shows, dance performances, picnics and hippo tours have become a much-looked forward-to feature for the residents. The SILRA family has enjoyed regular outings to the Pasir Ris Park, Hippo Tours, evenings around Little India for Diwali, kampong Glam and Geylang Serai for Hari Raya and China town for mid-Autumn.

The Art of Living contributes a fixed amount on a monthly basis to keep the activities going.

Established in 1971 in Singapore, The SILRA Home is committed to improving the lives of ex-leprosy victims by giving them love, care, and a home. Recreation and healthcare services are provided, along with training in handicraft and rehabilitative work. The Home has a total of 44 members of which 18 of them are on wheelchair.
