Appeal for Cyclone Fani: Relief & Rehabilitation
Cyclone Fani unleashed its terror on May 4, 2019, in what has been called the worst of its kind in India in two decades. It was termed as the “extremely severe” cyclonic storm, one of the “rarest of rare” that brought copious rain and windstorm, in official reports.
Cyclone Fani left behind a trail of devastation in large parts of coastal Odisha. On May 3, large areas in Puri and other places were submerged with water as heavy rains battered the entire coastal belt of the state. At least 14 districts in Odisha were in the path of the Cyclone Fani. Nearly 11 lakh people have been evacuated since May 4. Ganjam and Puri evacuated more than 3 lakh and 1.3 lakh people respectively to safe shelters.
The International Association for Human Values (IAHV), in partnership with The Art of Living, has established a disaster relief fund to provide humanitarian assistance to the victims of ‘Cyclone Fani,’ in the affected regions. Our volunteers have started addressing ground issues. We will be providing relief material immediately followed by trauma relief programs to those affected by the cyclone.
Our work
The Art of Living and IAHV have established themselves as vital providers of, both, short-term and long-term disaster rehabilitation programs in India and in many countries around the world.
From extensive relief and rehabilitation work in tsunami-affected areas to earthquake relief operations in Gujarat, our volunteers have worked with compassion, commitment and care to address physical, emotional and material needs of disaster victims. Some of the work that we have done in the recent past includes:
- Over 1,50,000 trauma-relief workshops have been conducted
- More than 5 million people benefitted
- Nepal Earthquake, 2015 - Distributed relief material (food, medicine, tents, blankets) to 1,50,000 victims
- Uttarakhand Floods, 2013 - 110 truckloads of relief material distributed among the affected
- Kashmir Earthquake, 2005 - Conducted trauma relief programs for 25,000 adults and 800 children
- Asian Tsunami, India and Sri Lanka, 2004 - Built a new primary and higher secondary school in Nagapattinam & provided Rs. 5 crores in food, medical aid, clothing to 10 villages
- Gujarat Earthquake, 2001 - provided food aid to around 30,000 people
