Challenge
One-third of water available in India is not potable
Strategy
Provide cheap and effective water purification technologies
Impact
45,000 +
Individuals have received access to
potable water
Overview
More than one-third of the water available in rural India is not potable. Every year, millions of people and children lose their lives because they lack access to clean drinking water. The Art of Living is responding to this crisis with ‘Boond’, an initiative helping communities access potable water using effective filtration units like Terafil filters, bio sand community filtration, aqua packs, and RO purification plants. Till now, we have provided safe drinking water to more than 45,000 individuals.
RURAL DEVELOPMENT
Develop rural India
Bring solar lighting, sanitation facilities, strong local governance and much more in rural India
Strategy
With presence in over 50,000 villages across India, Boond provides various options for clean drinking water by:
Aqua Packs - solar water pasteurization: All dangerous waterborne pathogens (bacteria, viruses, and parasites) can be killed at a temperature of approximately 65 ℃ (well below the boiling temperature of 100 ℃). Working on the same principle, Aqua Packs produce clean drinking water using only solar thermal energy. They reduce biological and viral pathogens by 99.99% in natural fresh-water resources. Aqua packs do not require maintenance or trained professionals. They can be distributed not only to remote villages but also as emergency water purifiers for post-disaster relief work.
TERAFIL™ water filters: TERAFIL™ water filter is a low-cost device to filter impure water into clean drinking water. It is developed to cater needs for clean drinking water, especially when the water is rich in sediments, suspended particles, iron, and microbes causing water-borne diseases. It is most suitable for areas where water from both surface and groundwater sources like dug wells, ponds, tube wells, and rivers is used for drinking.
Bio-sand community filtration: This system is a water treatment system which can provide 2,000-3,000 liters of safe water per day. It requires neither chemicals nor electricity to run. Therefore, it can be installed in any site in rural, semi-urban, or remote areas. Since it can be maintained by members of the community, it can also create livelihood options. The filter can be easily assembled with locally available material like sand, pebbles, and water tank.
