Overview

According to the 2011 census, 70% of Indians live in villages. Despite this considerable percentage, Indian villages are deprived of basic amenities which has led to an increasing number of villagers to migrate to cities. We believe that leaving their villages should be a matter of choice, not a compulsion. We want to make Indian villages self-sufficient and make it possible for villagers to live happily and with dignity. We are inspired by Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar’s vision of an ideal village where:

  • healthcare is available
  • hygiene is maintained
  • harmony in diversity is achieved
  • human values remain intact
  • villagers are free from addictions
  • chemical-free farming is practiced
  • livelihood opportunities are created
  • availability of sufficient water
  • women are empowered

We achieve the above parameters through spreading awareness, community-building processes, meditation programs, and special projects working towards skill development, sanitation, etc. In the past, we have also worked in tandem with the governments to fulfill the parameters of a model village as proposed by the governing bodies.

Strategy

Our strategy is as follows:

Community mobilization, sensitization and motivation: Through community-building and sensitization workshops, we bring the community together. The workshops play a crucial role in breaking barriers between people, promoting human values, and establishing harmony in diversity. The workshops also increase self-awareness, mindfulness, a sense of belongingness and energy levels of community members, which further gears them for participating in the project.

Creation of local community leaders: Selected youth from the village are trained in Karma Yog program (formery YLTP), which inculcates confidence, a sense of responsibility and ownership in them. These empowered youngsters then lead various initiatives to develop their village.

Discuss what it will take to turn the village into a model village: A group of important stakeholders is taken to model villages to exhibit how small changes can drive huge impact. Regular community meetings are organized to discuss success stories of other model villages and plan activities and projects which can turn their village into a model village.

Ensure community involvement and ownership: The above interventions motivate the community to take ownership and resolve their problems. The community involves itself through shramdaan (volunteering). The entire village voluntarily puts in the efforts to construct water conservation structures, toilets, etc.

The Art of Living has worked in tandem with the Government of Odisha to develop 50 model gram panchayats (GPs). The work eventually helped de-addict Lariapalli, one of the GPs completely and win the national award for prevention of alcoholism and substance abuse.
